Where to start
The story is meant to be read in order. Our common history tells, in eleven chapters, the family's story from the Holy Roman Empire to the children of Marie-Joseph d'Horrer, the ancestors of us all. The chapter « The branch that did not emigrate » is a digression: you can skip it. Then come the three branches, Russian, French and Italian, each with its own pages. At the bottom of every page, a link leads to the next one.
The names of people
- The name of the person whose life is told is written in CAPITALS.
- Their children are numbered 1°, 2°, 3°… in the order of their birth.
- In a compound first name, the part in bold is the name the person went by: SOPHIE-ANNE-MARIE was called Sophie.
- The names of the allied noble families are in bold the first time they appear on a page.
- In Russia, the second name is the patronymic, made from the father's first name: Georges Iossifovitch is the son of Joseph (Iossif), Olga Sergueievna the daughter of Serge.
Links in the text
- A name of a person or a place underlined with dots leads to that person in the family tree or to that place on the map of places.
- « Doc. 12 » leads to the page of the document: the scan, the text read on the scan and its translation. All the documents are gathered on the Documents page.
- A small number leads to a note at the bottom of the page; the note's number leads back to the text.
- The timeline gives the family's main dates beside those of history.
Searching
The « Search » button, at the top of every page, finds a name, a place or a word in the whole site, in the language of the page. Shortcut: the « / » key.
Living people
For living people, the site shows only what the family has agreed to make public: without that agreement, a date of birth shows only the year, and the tree says « Living descendant » instead of the name.
